The space and size of Vieux Carre lots were determined by the French, as was their practice of building directly on the banquette, or sidewalk, securing privacy in the courts and gardens behind their primary living quarters. The French also possessed the Gallic sentiment of desire for privacy in the home. The original front houses were smaller than today's Spanish-influenced homes, with larger garden areas for growing vegetables and raising poultry and farm animals to feed the family. The present day gardens reveal beauty, sculpture and architecture.
